History

Tryptophonic Records began life in 1998 under the name of Novy Mir Productions. Established initially to publish visionary works of literature, experimental science-fiction and avant-garde - releasing music was originally a side-line.

Since it's inception, the label has primarily been run by Maxwell Volume - with a lengthy list of collaborators over the years. Between 2010 and 2016 Max took a break from running the label to re-calibrate and worked with the Gong family, particularly Orlando Allen running Flamedog Records.

When originally established in the late 90s, the idea of a Netlabel barely existed, and the mechanics of operating a (very) small press publisher were challenging to put it mildly. Today many things have changed in terms of small groups having access to technology to make available creative works that are experimental, distributed and produced in an ethical way, and free of the constraints of Big Capitalism.
